PICK THE TILE FIRST
What is your dream tile? Pick a special or unique tile that truly compliments the area. Will you be using more than one tile? Choose a favorite one and then a couple of follow ups that showcase the first pick.
USE NO MORE THAN
THREE TYPES OF TILE
Use your first tile choice to pick one or two other types that go well together. Try a subtle color. If your first tile choice is somewhat plain, then try to pick a follow up tile that has a bit more pop to create visual interest in the room. Usually, you’ll pick one tile for the floor, one for the wall of the shower, tub, or backsplash and an accent tile to make a focal point. However, you can often opt to not choose the accent tile and instead just stick with two tile choices.
MAINTENANCE CONSIDERATIONS
Porcelain or ceramic tiles are virtually maintenance free. Gloss tiles require only a wipe down to look stunning. Matte tiles often have a textured surface that makes cleaning more difficult. Stone tiles require more maintenance and look good. Their porous nature can trap dirt and grime.
TILE SIZE
Currently, large tiles are trendy, but styles change like the wind. Think about the look you are trying to achieve. You can lay smaller tiles on the floor and larger on the walls to create the feel of more space. Bigger tiles give an illusion of space. Small tiles or mosaics can make a narrow room seem wide.
PATTERNED OR PLAIN TILES
Patterned tiles add flair and character to a space. They look great as a backsplash or in a border. Plain tiles create an ‘open space ‘ feel. Use patterned tiles in an isolated area to make the biggest impact. The pattern makes it feel like there is more space in the room. For a minimal look, go with plain tiles in high gloss to make the area seem spacious and breathtaking.
